Sometimes I get asked, do I need a blog added to my website and what are the benefits of doing this?
How Google works is they are constantly scanning websites for changes. They use ‘bots’ (robots) to crawl through your website on a regular basis, scanning for changes. If you can imagine a person going through every page on your website today. Then tomorrow doing the same thing but looking for changes from the previous day. Then this is what Google does, except it does it using computer programs to scan for changes.
Now, these programs are quite clever and can scan for all sorts of things, much like a human could. They can work out if you have added content on your site. They can even work out if you are doing naughty SEO things like adding the same search term hundreds of times to your site just to try and increase your ranking. If they perceive someone is trying to manipulate a search engine they will penalise the site. They may not even list it at all in search results. Which is a good thing as it stops people who are looking for something being sent to bogus sites.
They can also work out if you are actively adding content to your site. And if the content is appropriate and likely to be adding value to people searching for your services or site’s area of interest. This is why adding good content to your site in the form of blog articles, etc, is such a good idea. It shows your site is active. It increases the volume of good, interesting content on your site. This increases the likelihood that Google or other search engines will perceive your site is worthy of being returned higher in search results.
You don’t have to do a blog of course. You could just be adding more pages and more information. But a blog is a great way to add interesting articles to your site. This will only benefit you from an SEO point of view. But it’s not just about SEO. In the end, if people go to your site and they derive some benefit from reading an article or piece of content, then you are generating good will. A reason for them to return to read other articles or get information. Ultimately the aim is to turn this good will into them using your paid services if you are running a business.
As an example, if I sell cars and I write lots of stories about cars, giving lots of interesting information about cars, then the idea is that I start to be seen as an authority on cars. Then when I make recommendations about buying cars people are more likely to listen to my suggestions. They are more likely to buy my cars (the cars I recommend). That’s it in simple terms.
Nothing beats good content when it comes to bringing increasing visitor numbers to a site. A blog is a great way to add good content.
